Roadworthy Certificate

A vehicle must be roadworthy before being licensed. A roadworthy certificate confirms that the vehicle meets safety standards. It is usually required when:

• A vehicle changes ownership

• A used vehicle is re-registered

• A vehicle is brought into South Africa

How to apply:

1. Go to a private or public vehicle testing station.

2. Bring your ID and vehicle registration documents.

3. Pay the applicable testing fee.

4. If the vehicle passes, you’ll be issued a roadworthy certificate.

Temporary or Special Motor Vehicle Permit

You may apply for:

• A temporary permit (valid for 21 days) to:

  • Transport a vehicle within South Africa (e.g., to the buyer or for licensing)

  • Use a vehicle for a limited time when awaiting registration or licensing

  • Only one temporary permit is issued per vehicle owner

• A special permit (valid for 3 days) to:

  • Take a vehicle for testing, weighing, or repair

  • Repossess a vehicle

  • The vehicle may not carry goods or passengers

How to apply:

1. Visit a licensing office (registering authority).

2. Bring your ID and complete the TSP1 form.

3. Pay the required fee (cost varies by municipality).

4. The permit is issued same day.
