1. Advice for South Africans in the Event of Death Abroad
If a South African citizen dies while abroad, the nearest SA embassy or consulate can assist with notifying next of kin, providing guidance on repatriation of the remains, and offering general support. However, all funeral and transport costs are the responsibility of the family.

2. Apply for a Death Certificate
When someone dies in South Africa, the death must be reported to the Department of Home Affairs. A medical practitioner or police official completes a death notification form. The family can then apply for the official death certificate at a Home Affairs office using the required documents (ID, notice of death, etc.).

3. Report the Estate of a Deceased Person
When someone dies, their estate must be reported to the Master of the High Court. This includes submitting a death notice, the deceased’s will (if any), and a list of assets. The process differs depending on the value of the estate (above or below R250,000).
