CONSUMER PROTECTION JOINT OPERATIONS IN NAMAKWA

On 24 October 2025, the Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDAT) successfully concluded a five-day series of joint consumer protection operations across the Namakwa District. These operations formed part of the government’s ongoing commitment to protect consumers, promote fair trade, and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

The joint operations were conducted in collaboration with the Consumer Protection Authority, the South African Police Service (SAPS), Immigration, and Local Government. This multi-agency approach ensured thorough inspections and effective enforcement, addressing a wide range of consumer and business compliance issues.

Over the course of the operations, officials inspected approximately 70 shops across the district. The inspections focused on compliance with the Consumer Protection Act, immigration regulations, and other relevant legislation. Particular attention was given to the sale of expired or unsafe goods, misleading pricing, counterfeit products, and general business compliance. As a result of these interventions, a few arrests were made where serious non-compliance and unlawful activities were identified.

Beyond enforcement, the operations also played an important educational role. Business owners were guided on their legal responsibilities, while consumers were encouraged to understand their rights and duties, including checking expiry dates, demanding safe and quality products, and reporting violations to the relevant authorities.

DEDAT extends its sincere gratitude to the people of Namakwa for their cooperation, support, and positive engagement throughout the operations. The success of this initiative highlights the importance of collaboration between government and communities in building a safe, fair, and transparent marketplace.

Government remains committed to strengthening consumer protection and ensuring that economic activity in the district benefits both businesses and consumers in a lawful and sustainable manner.
