The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development in the Northern Cape has embarked on Rabies vaccination and awareness campaigns in the Namakwa District. The campaign commenced with vaccinations of dogs and cats in the remote areas.
The MEC for Agriculture, Land Reform and RuralDevelopment, Mr Norman Shushu said much still needs to be done to reverse the brutal acts of the 1913 Land Act. MEC Shushu was speaking at Cassel in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality on Saturday as part of commemorating the 1913 Natives Land Act Centanary.

The competition honours the best Female Entrepreneurs for their outstanding role in agriculture’s economic sector and for the promotion of household food security.
The MEC for Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Mr Norman Shushu will commemorate the 1913 Natives Land Act Centenary at Koeboes in the Namakwa District outside Richtersveld. This year mark the 100th year since the enactment of this brutal systematization of land alienation from the black indigenous majority. This Act, Act /27/13, was the first of a number of discriminatory laws that reinforced the massive dispossession of land from Black South Africans. This Natives Land Act contributed a lot in creating triple challenges of poverty, unemployment and equality confronting South Africa today. These challenges are felt by majority of our people particularly 12 million South Africa’s living in rural areas.
The Northern Cape Premier Ms Silvia Lucas will advance the empowerment of women, by honouring the best Female Entrepreneurs for their outstanding role in agriculture’s economic sector and the promotion of household food security.
Premier Lucas together with the MEC for Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Mr Norman Shushu will confer the honours at the gala awards ceremony in Port Nolloth, Namakwa District on 07th August 2013.
The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development’s Female Entrepreneur Awards 2013’s adjudication team has started with the mammoth task of selecting the province Best Female Entrepreneur in the province. This after receiving 44 entrants for the competition. and none of them has been disqualified.
The Female Entrepreneur Awards Competition 2013 is an annual event to acknowledge the contribution of women to agriculture and poverty eradication.

The two-week course in Sheep Shearing and Wool Classification is currently underway in Loxton at the Ubuntu Local Municipality in the Pixley ka Seme District.
The Department’s total budget allocation for the 2013/14 financial year is R690.023 million.
This is a 5 per cent decrease when compared to the original estimate of the 2012/13 financial year.

The MEC for Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, in the Northern Cape, Mr Norman Shushu has handed over six crayfish boats and other fishing equipments to the tune of R1.8 million rand to the Hoderklipbaai Fisheries Project, on the 22nd Friday 2013.
