The two day Northern Cape Cabinet Extended Executive Council Lekgotla kicked off today. The Lekgotla is a periodic government’s planning session that is attended by the Premier and all MEC’s, their Heads of Department (HODs), District Mayors, and Regional Heads of National Departments in order to translate the ruling party’s priorities into the Government’s programme of Action for the next year.

The Premier, Ms Hazel Jenkins, emphasised that to this end Government has made great strides in improving the lives of the citizens but much more can still be done. She is however confident that the workforce of the Northern Cape bear the potential and commitment to deliver on this mandate to the people of this Province and emphasised that no room will be allowed for Public Servants set on drawing a salary.

The forum will look at developing guidelines that highlights the administration’s priorities for the financial year ahead. All Government Departments will present their draft Plans of Action and prioirities that will be developed into an overall provincial government Programme of Action that will form the basis of the Premier’s State of the Province Address (SOPA) scheduled to take place on Friday, 18 February 2011 at the Provincial Legislature.

The Lekgotla will align all departments’ priorities to be in line with the National Government Priorities as stipulated in the State of the Nation Address by the President. Critical to the Lekgotla discussions will be the provincial response to the President’s call of job creation.

In addition, the provincial government will also look into the following priority areas viz. climate change, safety and fighting crime, better municipal government performance through the Local Government Turnaround Strategy as well as progress on Human Settlements, improved health administration and quality of service, land reform and rural development, creating work opportunities through the expanded public works programme and investment promotion.
