An organisation formed by group of people with a similar objective which is derived from a common ground to address their challenges.<\/p>\n

Common basic principles for the co-operatives are:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Voluntary and open membership<\/li>\n
  2. Democratic member control<\/li>\n
  3. Member economic participation<\/li>\n
  4. Autonomy and independence<\/li>\n
  5. Education, training and information<\/li>\n
  6. Cooperation among co-operatives<\/li>\n
  7. Concern for community.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    When forming a co-operative, there are five things that one must make sure of:<\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Meeting of all members to speak to your interest<\/li>\n
    2. Appoint a steering committee that will oversee the administration work of the organisation.<\/li>\n
    3. Formation meeting to deal with founding documents that defines the organisation.<\/li>\n
    4. The board meeting to establish an executive of the organisation.<\/li>\n
    5. Registration of the organisation with registrar of cooperatives is very key.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Levels and Kind of Co-ops<\/strong><\/p>\n

        \n
      • Primary Co-operative
        \n\t\t\t\t– Formed by a minimum of five persons<\/li>\n
      • Secondary Co-operative
        \n\t\t\t\t– Formed by two or more primary Co-ops,<\/li>\n
      • Tertiary Co-op
        \n\t\t\t\t– Formed by Secondary co-ops or both secondary and primary co-ops<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Support to Co-ops in the Northern Cape<\/strong><\/p>\n

          \n
        • Expose product ready co-ops to exhibitions for enhancing their product marketability,<\/li>\n
        •  Link Coops to SEDA for ongoing capacity building,<\/li>\n
        • Assist co-ops with referrals to relevant business support orgnaizationsin relation to their needs,<\/li>\n
        • Assist Co-ops with application for Tax Clearances,<\/li>\n
        • Assist Coops with accessing the Dti Support Scheme namely the Cooperative Incentive Scheme (CIS\/ R 350 000)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          – It is not a Cash Financing Scheme.
          \n\t\t\t– Oftenly used to purchase start up equipment or goods.
          \n\t\t\t– For Agricultural Co-ops, it will not be used to purchase livestock, but rather equipment required to advance farming or feed.
          \n\t\t\t– Assist Co-ops in facilitating JV's with possible investors.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
