Kimberley Takes Centre Stage: Diamond and Dorings KDC Skateboarding Championships 2025 Finale

A Global Spotlight on the Northern Cape

Kimberley roared with excitement as the Northern Cape hosted the grand finale of the 2025 Diamond and Dorings KDC Skateboarding Championships on 5 and 6 December. The event brought together athletes, fans, and families from across the globe, showcasing the province as a hub for extreme sports and adventure tourism.

“Hosting the final leg of the Diamond and Dorings KDC Skateboarding Championships was a moment of pride for the Northern Cape,” said the MEC of Economic Development and Tourism. “It showcased Kimberley as a hub for extreme sports, attracted global talent, and created opportunities for local businesses. More than just a sporting event, it inspired our youth and highlighted our commitment to economic growth and youth development.”

World-Class Talent on Display

The championship featured a prize purse of R300 000 and attracted elite skaters from the USA, England, Scotland, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Thailand, and African nations including Lesotho, Mozambique, Madagascar, and Eswatini. The calibre of competitors elevated the event to an international stage, offering spectators breathtaking performances, daring tricks, and moments of sheer athletic brilliance.

Adding to the spectacle was a high-adrenaline freestyle FMX motocross show. “International participation enhances credibility,” the MEC explained. “When athletes, media, and fans from around the world showcase Kimberley on global platforms, it amplifies our tourism brand and positions the Northern Cape as a destination for adventure and adrenaline tourism.”

Celebrating the Champions

The weekend culminated in a celebration of skill and determination. South Africa’s Karina Naldrett claimed victory in the Under-16 Girls category, while Mohau Mathisi, also from South Africa, triumphed in the Under-16 Boys category. In the Women’s Open, Orapong Tongkong from Thailand took top honours, and the Men’s Open title went to Jeff Dechesare from the USA. Their remarkable performances not only thrilled the crowd but also underscored the global prestige of the KDC Championships.

Boosting Local Economies and Youth Empowerment

The KDC Championship did more than thrill audiences—it drove economic activity and inspired the province’s youth. Local businesses, SMMEs, and craft vendors benefited from increased foot traffic and exposure, while young attendees gained first-hand inspiration from world-class athletes.

“The KDC creates opportunities for local businesses, SMMEs, and tourism operators,” the MEC said. “At the same time, youth gain exposure to global talent and inspiration for future careers in sport and entrepreneurship.”

A Weekend of Action and Entertainment

The two-day event offered a carefully curated schedule packed with excitement. On Friday, 5 December, skaters arrived in the afternoon for the welcoming ceremony, a skater demo, freestyle motocross, and the Under-16 finals. Early spectators had the chance to win skateboards, tablets, and official KDC merchandise.

A Legacy of Sport, Tourism, and Opportunity

By hosting the KDC finale, Kimberley and the Northern Cape demonstrated how sport can drive tourism, empower youth, and stimulate local economies. The event left a lasting impression on both the international sporting community and local residents, cementing the province’s reputation as a vibrant centre for extreme sports and adventure tourism.
