Landcare on the Spotlight in the Northern Cape

The Northern Cape Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development will once again mark the province’s LandCare Week, 27-29, by mobilizing the farming community and the broader society to assist in conserving natural resources such as land and water.

The three day conference will be held at the Kopano Centre, Beaconsfield in Kimberley under the theme “Countering land degradation to ensure sustainable food security”.

LandCare seeks to encourage and support sustainable land use and practices. It also raises awareness to develop a resource conservation ethics. Since the conceptualization in 1998, the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development has implemented about 167 LandCare projects, with a total amount of over R68 million.

A wide range of agricultural stakeholders are expected to descend in Kimberley to participate in a workshop and deliberate on issues regarding natural resource management. LandCare beneficiaries, representatives of Provincial and National Department of Agriculture, organized agriculture and leading academics are set to attend.

In this current financial year 2013/2014 the LandCare programme is implementing four projects with a total amount of R 12, 055,000.

LandCare community driven projects are to be visited within the Francis Baard District. An awards gala ceremony will also be held to bestow honours on those community driven projects that have stood the LandCare test with poise.
