The Northern Cape MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Pauline Williams has handed over an artificial turf to the community of Van Zylsrus in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District. MEC Williams was accompanied by the MEC for Socia.
Development Tiny Chotelo as well as representatives of both John Taolo Gaetsewe District and the local Joe Morolong Municipalities.
The turf was built as part of the 2010 World Cup Legacy Project by the Northern Cape Provincial Government. A similar project rolled out by FIFA has about 52 such facilities planned across the country. FIFA is currently rolling out 27 similar facilities with the Northern Cape receiving three such facilities at Britstown in the Pixley ka Seme, Paballelo in Siyanda and O’kiep in the Namakwa Districts.
The handing over has been jointly rolled out by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culturte, John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality as well as Joe Morolong Local Municipality. The project which has cost about seven million rand will boast a club house and a change room. The facility has also been equipped with a television set, a DVD player and a projector for educational purposes.
The state of the art facility has been named after a deceased activist Jacob Shuping. It will be managed by the Local Management Committee which is to be set up by the local municipalities. Although the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture will have to ensure programme development for the facilities, the facility can be accessed by anyone who wishes to participate in sport.
